Pharmacological (medication) treatments in psychiatry....⬇️
Pharmacotherapy is the use of various types of psychotropic medication to treat psychological symptoms. Some medications are marketed for so-called disorders (e.g. depression, schizophrenia, bipolar disorder). However, psychiatric disorders are more complicated than diseases like diabetes where the dysfunction involves defined changes in blood chemistry. Specific mechanisms that lead to mental disorder remain unknown so it is very difficult to target a treatment at one specific cause.
In my experience, medications are best used in addition to ongoing psychotherapy and/or behavioural, environmental and lifestyle changes.
I will utilise my medical expertise to provide evidence based medication treatments best suited to your diagnosis. Occasionally, I may use medications outside their lisenced indication. I will always provide you with comprehensive written and verbal information on potential side effects.
